One of the most important things to bring when hiking or backpacking is food. You can’t go without it especially if you’ll be spending multi-days and nights in the wilderness. This is where you can get energy to push through and survive the days away from the comfort of your own home.
If you are planning to go camping, you must also be thinking about camping food that does not need to be cooked, campfire cooking, lunch ideas for hiking, recipes for camping trips, and the list goes on summarizing your thought into food. It’s not easy to prepare meals while camping especially when you are tired and exhausted already. Although there are fast and easy camping meals that you can cook on the first and second day, it’s a whole different story when you’re having a week-long backpacking trip or more. It’s a great challenge to create a 7-day camping menu plan, and that’s when Mountain House came into picture.
Mountain House specializes with food for outdoor activities and emergency preparedness. They have dehydrated camping food that can last for a long time, emergency food supply, and many more which cover breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Who wouldn’t want a hash browns and scrambled eggs for breakfast? Well, this Mountain House Breakfast Skillet has it all with crumbled pork patty, onions and peppers! Surprisingly, this meal tastes awesome compared to other dehydrated meals you can buy in the market and it’s easy to prepare – just add hot water.
If you’re someone who loves spicy food like us, this Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef is good for you. This is one of my favorites among all the food pouches of Mountain House. It is very tasty just like a homemade chilli mac and I highly recommend it. In fact, it’s always on our list whenever we have a camping trip.
Have you ever imagined cooking a beef recipe while camping? It’s tough right? Before you can eat that, you may have to spend a lot of time while waiting for the meat to become tender. Thankfully, Mountain House has their pouch of Beef Stroganoff with Noodles which can be easily prepared. We certainly love this meal for camping.
If you are one of those people who are rice lovers, don’t be sad because Mountain House has their Rice and Chicken meal. It has a savory sauce with some pimientos and the rice is seasoned well. Tastes really good but don’t expect too much to see large chunks of chicken. Even so, it is still a great companion in the trail.
Oh yes! Say hurrah pasta lovers! You can have this Mountain House Spaghetti with Meat Sauce as one of your meals in the mountains. Cooking pasta takes too much time but this one can be served in just few minutes. It has small beef chunks and a good-tasting marinara sauce. Highly recommended source of carbs for long hikes.
Another rice meal from Mountain House is the Chicken Teriyaki. Just as expected from the manufacturer, this one tastes great as well. Aside from the rice and chicken being the main ingredients, it also has mushrooms, vegetables and bamboo shoots, with a delicious oriental sauce. It is a nice-to-have meal when camping.
If you often camp with a child like us, it can be a daunting task to make him eat instant food that he has never encountered before. It’s a good thing that Mountain House has this Scrambled Eggs and Bacon meal. Our little one couldn’t resist the smell and taste of the bacon crumbles in the scrambled eggs. Great for breakfast!
Another pasta meal from Mountain House is the Lasagna with Meat Sauce. Since it’s in a pouch or can, don’t expect the lasagna to look like the ones on a pan. It’s more like a cubed version of lasagna but still tastes great because it’s made from real pasta. It has an Italian style meat sauce and cheese, making it super yummy!
If there are chicken meals, of course there is also pork. Don’t hesitate to grab this Mountain House Sweet & Sour Pork with Rice when you’re about to have a backpacking trip. I am honestly not a fan of sweet dishes, but this one tastes just right. It has real pork, onions, rice and pineapple sauce. It may be too sweet for some, but for me, it’s just okay.
I didn’t expect too much about this Mountain House Chicken and Dumplings with Vegetables meal because I don’t like veggies. However, I still tried this one and I surprisingly liked it! It tastes good like a homemade version and I’d love to have it as food for overnight hiking trip. My son likes it too.
Overall, Mountain House food products are not just for camping and backpacking. You can also store some of these on your own home just in case of emergency or other unexpected circumstances. Treat them as your survival food not only in the mountains but also in the city. Even though they are dried food, they are still decent meals that you can eat after adding some water. Easy to prepare, tastes good, and has long shelf-life. Another good thing is that it comes in different sizes – pouch, pro-pak, and can. Don’t forget to bring your camping stove and cookset for boiling water.
