There is nothing so exciting for a new hiker like successfully reaching the top of a mountain, and taking time to sleep in regions that are pretty cold. These are the kind of challenges that make mountain climbing worthwhile. After two or three nights in the high altitudes, your hiking zeal is always renewed day after day. The cold mountains shouldn’t scare you to enjoy the mysteries of nature. In fact, you should consider challenging yourself to reach the pinnacles of some of the challenging trails that the world has to offer. 

How to sleep comfortably when camping in cold mountains?

Get the right bedding

If you know that you will be sleeping in cold mountains, see to it that you take the correct beddings with you. Basically, see to it that the bedding of your choice inflates properly. Further, it should be made of high quality materials and created to buffer you against cold temperatures. You can as well carry a small backpacking pillow that will help support your head, and if you forget then create one by stuffing clothes in one of your t-shirt. Creativity is always the mother of invention, but take note the makeshift pillow will not be so comfy.

Control temperature technique

This is one of the things that experienced hikers have always advised on. In order to control temperatures, see to it that you choose the correct sleeping bad. In fact, if you know about the weather patterns in that region yourself a favor by going for those bags that are recommended for specific attitudes. If not, then try to consult extensively on the weather patterns of the area prior to choosing your sleeping bag.

Noise management

It can be thrilling to be in the wild at night when the temperatures are cold. However, even with the best sleeping bag, if you do not know how to control noise then definitely you’ll have a terrible night. If you like noise that chirping of night birds and crickets, then you will have no issue with sleeping. However, if you can’t stand such kind of noise ensure that you have an app that can lull you to sleep. Alternatively, you can use ear plugs or similar equipment to keep the noise at controlled levels.

Always keep the tent dry

If you want to enjoy a good night sleep, your tent must be kept dry. In other words, take note where you put tent and consider using a tarp. Tarps are great as they can be placed on the floor of your tent, or even thrown over your tent for extra rain water protections.

Sleeping pads placed next to each other

This will protect cold air rising from the floor. If you are sleeping a group, then the chances of you keeping warm are relatively high, and better than those who are not sharing tents. In the morning, it will even be worse and unbearable to wear cold shoes. In order to counter this problem, stash away your boot liners in your bag and in the morning you’ll be good to go. As such, do not hesitate to check the tents rigging by checking in shifts, so that you can prevent strong winds from blowing the structure away.

Hot bottle tip

This is one of things that experienced hikers love to do, and they’ll place hot water bottle in their bag so that heat radiates evenly keeping them warm. If your bag is of high quality, you will have no issue implementing this technique at any time. Nevertheless, if the quality of your bag is questionable, you can still place the bottle in some of your clothes before stashing it away in your sleeping bad. As far as keeping warm in cold mountains is concerned, hot bottle technique is easier to implement and cheaper.

Keep warm-layering

This is a trick that has worked since time immemorial - I bet from the time people got interesting in mountain climbing. In this case, ensure that you layer clothes on your body so that you are not distracted by the cold air while sleeping. As a matter of necessity, always ensure that you carry with you extra warm clothing if you are going to sleep up in the mountains. These should include synthetic top closest to your body, as it is known to work well in cold temperatures. Last but not least, find something of good quality to cover your head.

It is imperative that you consider all the mentioned tips-lest you fall sick up there in the mountains. As a word of advice, do not spend very cold nights alone as it can be dangerous. Hiking in a group can save you so much trouble, especially if the weather is windy or raining in some way. After all, you went hiking to have fun and not fall sick.
