Quechua by Decathlon Hiking Gears for Kids Review

Quechua by Decathlon Hiking Gears for Kids Review

Year 2012 when we started bringing Wyatt Maktrav to outdoors. That time, it's so hard to find appropriate hiking and camping gears for babies and kids. Both local and imported outdoor brands that are available in the Philippines only offer items for adults.

That's why we're very happy when the first branch of Decathlon opened in the Philippines last 2017. I can still recall the hype because of the huge selection of items not only for hiking and camping but for all sports at an affordable price. They have a wide range of sport items for toddlers, kids, teens, and adults which is a huge plus!

Before our flight to Japan for our Mt. Fuji climb, Wyatt got his complete hiking gears from Decathlon Alabang. Here's our honest review:

Children's Waterproof High Hiking Shoes

PRICE: PHP 2,800.00

Our Rating:

Wyatt has wide feet so it's always a struggle for us to find any kinds of shoes that will fit well on him. However, this pair of hiking shoes is so great! The fit is just perfect on Wyatt and he said it's so comfortable to wear. He used this on a 3-day hike and never did he complain about it and got no blisters.

It was raining during our hike so we tested its waterproof capability. We were so surprised that Wyatt's feet are all dry after 8 hours of walking up to the mountain. How awesome is that?

The trails up to Mt. Fuji have mostly loose rocks and there are some steep parts where you'll be like rock scrambling. Good thing that these hiking shoes have a very good grip. I personally tripped over several times with my old shoes but Wyatt did not stumble even once with his Quechua hiking shoes.

Overall, we highly recommend this for a multi-day hike.

MH500 Junior 15-Litre Kid's Hiking Backpack

MH500 Junior 15-Litre Kid's Hiking Backpack

PRICE: PHP 400.00

Our Rating:

There's a lot of color selection for this hiking backpack for kids. Wyatt chose this one because his favorite color is green. During our Mt. Fuji climb, Wyatt put most of his things inside this backpack with around 5 kg of weight - including his water. It may look small but it's actually spacious.

The padding on the shoulder straps are so comfortable. It has an adjustable chest straps as well and side pockets where you can put water bottles or trail food for easy access. The zippers used on this backpack have good quality too.

The only downside is that it has no rain cover. We are prepared for the rain so we put Wyatt's things inside a Ziplock before putting them in the backpack. Other Quechua backpacks that we own have rain covers.

Anyway, for the price of PhP 400, this is quite a steal! We recommend this kid's hiking backpack for a short hike on a dry weather.

Boy's 3in1 Warm Snow Hiking Jacket SH500 X-Warm

Warm Snow Hiking Jacket SH500 Shell
Warm Snow Hiking Jacket SH500 fleece

PRICE: PHP 3,500.00

Our Rating:

This 3-in-1 jacket is Wyatt's favorite and he was able to use it three ways. At first, Wyatt used only the shell and it served as his rain jacket. The waterproofing is great - it kept him dry inside even though we've been walking in the rain for about 4 hours.

The hood is a little bit big for Wyatt but it is adjustable so it's not an issue. The hand cuffs can be tightened too. Wyatt liked the side pockets too because he was able to put his hands there when it got too cold at the top.

During the night at the mountain hut, Wyatt just used the fleece jacket. He didn't use the sleeping bag anymore because the fleece is quite warm and it suffice for him. As he described on his own words, "this jacket is so fluppy and cozy."

The following day, we resumed hiking very early in the morning. It was very cold that time so Wyatt used both the fleece and the shell at the same time. You can combine them through the side zippers or you can just wear the shell on top of the fleece.

Overall, this 3-in-1 hiking jacket is top-notch! It's really a big help to endure the cold weather on the top of the mountain. Although there's no other color option, it's not really a problem. We highly recommend this Quechua hiking jacket for short and long hikes, in all kinds of weather.

MH550 Children's Convertible Hiking Trousers

MH550 Children's Convertible Hiking Trousers

PRICE: PHP 1,300.00

Our Rating:

After 6 years, Wyatt finally got his first ever proper hiking pants. Before, he only used regular pants when hiking so it's quite uncomfortable for him. Thank goodness Decathlon has this Quechua hiking pants for kids.

It is convertible so you can easily detach and attach the lower part through the zipper. There are color indicators inside so you won't get confused when putting them. The waist has an adjustable garter with buttons too.

Another plus factor of this hiking trousers is that it is lightweight and it dries up quickly. So even though it's not waterproof, rest assured that it will get dry in no time when the rain stops.

We recommend this kid's convertible hiking trousers for hikes in dry season. You can still use this during rainy season but it's better if you can use rain pants on top of it. If the weather is too cold, you can put thermal pants as base layer.

Forclaz Kids' Hiking Pole

Kids Hiking Pole

PRICE: PHP 430.00

Our Rating:

Having this kid's hiking pole really helped Wyatt a lot on climbing Mt. Fuji. It is lightweight and has a good foam handle that's just right on his grip.

Unlike other usual hiking poles that you'll have to turn around to lock, this one is different. You can adjust this hiking pole by pushing the small metal button then slide to lock on the hole of your desired height. This hiking pole is really meant for kids so the length is perfect for Wyatt.

This is safe for kids to use because the tip of the pole is not sharp and pointed. You don't have to worry about them getting hurt by this.

The only downside that we experienced with this was that the metal button got misaligned and didn't lock anymore. But when we disassembled the pole and put back again, it got back to normal.

MH100 Children's Hiking Cap

MH100 Children's Hiking Cap Turquoise

PRICE: PHP 240.00

Our Rating:

This hiking cap for kids has a lot of color and design options but Wyatt chose this turquoise one because it's a family of green - his favorite color.

The weather in the mountains is so unpredictable. It can be sunny for a while and then suddenly it will rain so hard. When hiking, it's best to be ready for all the possible weather conditions because you'll never know how fast the weather can change.

It is breathable, lightweight. It is a little bit loose on Wyatt's head size but it has an adjustable velcro strap at the back so it fitted nicely on him. Another plus factor is that it is quick dry. Just in case it gets wet, you don't have to worry so much. This is highly recommended for kids to use when hiking especially during summer.

Crossocks Children's Mid-Rise Mountain Hiking Socks

Crossocks Children's Mid-Rise Mountain Hiking Socks

PRICE: PHP 220.00

Our Rating:

These socks come in two pairs. The size is just right on Wyatt's feet and he said his heels feel so comfortable with it.

Wyatt really loved these Quechua hiking socks because they are a perfect combination to his mid-rise hiking shoes. His skin didn't rub on the shoes because of these socks which really helped in preventing getting blisters in long hikes.

The only downside is that these socks don't dry quickly as we expected. Nevertheless, it's still a highly recommended product when hiking in short distance.

500 Tritan 0.5L Hiking Water Bottle with Quick-Opening Top

500 Tritan 0.5L Hiking Water Bottle with Quick-Opening Top

PRICE: PHP 220.00

Our Rating:

There are different colors to choose from but as usual, Wyatt chose the green one. He really loved using this not only in the mountains but also in the house. Actually, he brings it wherever we go. This became his official drinking bottle.

This water bottle is very child-friendly because it can be opened and closed easily. No need to ask help from adults. We liked that it fits well on the side pocket of Wyatt's hiking backpack. It is very durable too. One time, it slipped from Wyatt's hands because of the gloves and it fell on the ground but it didn't break.

We highly recommend this hiking water bottle for both kids and adults. For long hikes, you can get the bigger version of this bottle.

M100 Children's Hiking Shorts

M100 Children's Hiking Shorts

PRICE: PHP 520.00

Our Rating:

Wyatt wasn't able to use this hiking shorts during our hike in Mt. Fuji because it's cold there. He just used his Quechua convertible trousers until we get back down.

He used this gray hiking shorts when we had a side trip to a National Garden in Tokyo. Wyatt liked this too because it is thin and lightweight which makes it comfortable to wear. I'm pretty sure it's good to wear for hiking in the mountains because that's what it is made for.

We recommend this for hiking during summer or for taking small distance walks in the park.

Children's Knitted Hiking Gloves MH100

Children's Knitted Hiking Gloves MH100

PRICE: PHP 180.00

Our Rating:

These hiking gloves for kids provided warmth on Wyatt's hands during the night and on our early morning ascent to the mountain. It is perfectly fitted on his hands - not too loose and not too tight.

It has touchscreen capability on the thumb and index fingers which is a plus, but not really necessary when hiking. The downside is that it's not waterproof. Wyatt only used them inside the mountain hut and for just a short while during the hike because the rain come and go.

It is recommended for use while sleeping in the cold environment and dry weather outdoors.

Travel Multi-Compartment Pouch

Travel Multi-Compartment Pouch

PRICE: PHP 400.00

Our Rating:

It's not really for kids but the shoulder strap can be adjusted to fit on the kid's body built if they want to use it. I (Wyatt's mom) was the one who actually used this in the mountain.

I have the backpack with some of the bulky things we have and this compartment pouch is such a good extra where we put small things that we frequently need like coins, pen, tickets, paper, hand sanitizer, band aids, etc.

This is really so useful because I don't have to open the big backpack over and over again just to get something. It has velcro straps at the back so you can attach it to the belt. You can also put a carabiner on it and hang on your bigger backpack. But for me, I prefer to carry it over my shoulder.

It is not waterproof so I used small ziplocks for the paper and money before putting them inside. Despite that, I super love this pouch and I highly recommend it not only for hiking but also for traveling in general.

Children's Hiking T-Shirts

PRICE: PHP 200.00 to 400.00

Our Rating:

Wyatt used these various Quechua hiking t-shirts during our Japan trip and he really loved them all. There are other awesome shirt designs to choose from so don't hesitate to go to the nearest Decathlon store.

Anyway, these shirts are lightweight and perfect to use for all weather conditions. They dry quickly so even though it rains during the hike, you don't have to worry so much.

We recommend these kid's hiking t-shirts for short and multi-day hikes regardless of the terrain and the weather.

MH100 40-L Mountain Walking Backpack

MH100 40-L Mountain Walking Backpack

PRICE: PHP 2000.00

Our Rating:

This hiking backpack is not for small kids but we're including it on this review because we used this on our Mt. Fuji climb. This is where we put most of our stuff like change of clothes, jackets, food supplies, and other hiking essentials.

The backpack is lightweight and with ventilated back. We loved that the support belt has a small pocket where you can put your phone, some cash, and some trail food. It's so convenient and accessible.

We also liked the mesh side pockets because they are quite deep compared to other hiking backpacks available in the market. If you put your water bottle or hiking pole on the side, they will surely not fall down.

The downside is that it doesn't have its own rain cover and the top load pocket isn't adjustable. Anyway, a separate orange rain cover is available for sale on Decathlon which fits perfectly on this backpack. We recommend this for short hikes.
